The Many Parks of Wilkes-Barre

The city of Wilkes-Barre, PA, is surrounded by some of the most impressive natural beauty in the nation.  In addition, residents and visitors are able to take advantage of a wide range of parks, spanning options such as small, in-town parks to sprawling state parks throughout the area.  Moreover, these parks are home to numerous events held throughout the year.

Kirby Park – Located in Kingston, this park is a full 52 acres in size.  It offers a number of options for residents and visitors to the city, as well.  The park features sporting venues, such as volleyball, tennis courts, a pond, walking paths and more.  It is also home to the city’s annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors to the area each year.

Coal Street Park – Coal Street Park has just received the funding for a $13.7 million remake.  It will be transformed into the premier recreational complex in the city.  Currently, the park occupies 37 acres in the city, and is located on Coal Street, in the Heights neighborhood of town.  Additions to the park with the center will be a hockey rink, a skate park and training facilities for numerous sports.

Frances Slocum Park – Frances Slocum Park is one of the most popular state parks in Pennsylvania.  It is also located within 10 miles of the city of Wilkes-Barre.  The park offers a number of recreational options, including fishing, hunting, camping, rafting, picnicking, boating, sledding and more.  The park is also home to a number of events throughout the year.  Family nature hikes are held here, as are the Live Birds of Prey shows, Raccoons for Kids, the Spring Trail Run (19th annual run) and numerous other options that are ideal for enjoyment by kids of all ages, teens and adults alike.
